Striped Bass

While not as common as other species, striped bass (or wipers, which are striped bass/white bass hybrids) can be found in the Missouri River near Johnson, Nebraska. These fish are usually stocked, so their presence can vary from year to year. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Look for them near dams, in deep holes, and along riprap banks. Anglers often have success trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits. A local hotspot is often below the Cooper Nuclear Station dam, but be mindful of restricted areas and safety regulations. Anglers launching from the Nebraska City boat ramp should head north towards the dam. Keep an eye on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission stocking reports to see when and where striped bass have been released for the best chance of success.
