Striped Bass

While McCool Junction might not be the first place that comes to mind for striped bass, the stocking programs in some of the larger reservoirs in the area have created a unique, albeit challenging, fishery. These stripers, though not as massive as their coastal counterparts, can provide an exciting fight in freshwater. The best time to target them is in the spring and fall, when water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Trolling deep-diving crankbaits or casting swimbaits near submerged structure are popular techniques. Access to the reservoirs is generally good, with several boat ramps available. Be aware that striped bass fishing can be hit-or-miss, as the population density is lower compared to traditional striper fisheries. However, the chance of landing a trophy-sized fish makes it worthwhile. Local anglers often recommend checking water levels and clarity before heading out, as these factors can significantly impact fishing success.
