While not as widely known for tarpon as, say, Boca Grande, the St. Johns River and its associated brackish waters provide excellent habitat, particularly during the warmer months. Look for tarpon congregating around creek mouths and deeper holes as they move in and out with the tide. The peak season is generally late spring through summer (May-August) when the water temperatures are consistently warm. Live mullet or large, flashy artificial lures are your best bet. A local tip: focus on areas with submerged structure, like docks and fallen trees, as tarpon often use these as ambush points. The tarpon here tend to be slightly smaller on average compared to the Keys, but what they lack in size, they make up for in willingness to bite, and the relative lack of fishing pressure makes for a rewarding experience. Be prepared for strong runs and acrobatic jumps – these fish are fighters!
