Tautog

If you're after Tautog, or Blackfish as they're also known, Newport's rocky coastline is prime habitat. These fish are masters of camouflage and prefer structure-rich environments such as docks, bridges, and rocky bottoms. Fall is the peak season for Tautog in Rhode Island, as they move inshore to spawn. Green crabs are the bait of choice, but Asian crabs are a decent substitute. When fishing for Tautog, it's crucial to use a sturdy rod and reel, as they are powerful fighters and will immediately try to bury themselves in the rocks. Be prepared to lose some tackle! Fort Adams State Park offers excellent shore access to rocky areas, but be sure to check for any parking restrictions. Remember to use a tight line and be ready to set the hook hard and fast. They are notoriously difficult to hook and land, but the reward is well worth the effort.
