Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, offer a challenging and rewarding angling experience near Coles Point, Virginia. These bottom-dwelling fish thrive around structure, making the many bridge pilings, rock piles, and wrecks in the lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay prime locations. The fall and winter months are the most productive as tautog move inshore to feed. Unlike many species, tautog prefer colder water. Presenting crabs, especially green crabs, on a jig or bottom rig is the go-to method. Tautog fishing requires patience and a feel for the bite. Be prepared to lose some tackle as these fish are masters at hiding in the rocks. The public boat ramp at Westmoreland State Park offers good access to the nearby tautog hotspots. Remember to check the VMRC regulations for size and creel limits before you fish, as these can change seasonally.
