Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a prized catch around Virginia Beach, particularly for anglers who enjoy a challenge. These bottom-dwelling fish are notoriously picky eaters and inhabit rocky structures and wrecks in the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The best time to target Tautog is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they congregate around these structures. Green crabs are the bait of choice, but you'll need to present them carefully to avoid getting snagged on the bottom. A sturdy rod and reel are essential for pulling these fish out of their rocky lairs. A helpful local tip is to fish during periods of slack tide, as this will make it easier to maintain contact with the bottom. Be prepared for a tough fight and remember to use heavy leaders to prevent break-offs.
