Bluefish

Virginia Beach offers fantastic bluefish action, especially when migratory baitfish are plentiful. The Lynnhaven Inlet and Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are prime spots, offering access to deeper channels and strong currents that bluefish favor. Peak season is typically late spring through fall, as warmer waters bring in schools of menhaden and other forage. A key tactic is matching your lure or bait to the prevalent baitfish. Live or cut menhaden are always effective, but don't overlook casting spoons or crankbaits that mimic their profile. Pay close attention to water temperature and current; blues often hold in areas where these converge. Many anglers find success trolling along the edges of channels or casting from the piers at First Landing State Park. Remember that bluefish are aggressive feeders, so use heavier tackle and wire leaders to prevent bite-offs.
