Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, offer a challenging and rewarding fishing experience near Onancock. These fish are structure-oriented, so target rocky bottoms, wrecks, and bridge pilings in the Chesapeake Bay. Tautog fishing is best during the cooler months, typically spring and fall, when the fish are more active and closer to shore. They are notoriously picky eaters, so fresh bait is crucial. Green crabs, fiddler crabs, and clams are all excellent choices. A strong rod and reel are necessary to haul these fish out of their rocky lairs. Anglers should pay attention to the tide, as tautog often feed more aggressively during periods of strong current.
