Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a challenging but rewarding target around West Point, Virginia. These bottom-dwelling fish are structure aficionados, lurking around rocks, pilings, and wrecks in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The fall and winter months are prime time, as they move inshore to spawn. Focus your efforts around the pilings of the Coleman Bridge or any submerged structure you can locate on your depth finder. A stout rod and reel are essential, as tautog are powerful fighters. Crab is the bait of choice, presented on a jig or bottom rig. A local tip: be prepared to lose tackle, as tautog live in snag-filled environments. Also, pay close attention to the tide; tautog often feed most actively during slack tide.
