Wahoo
The Wahoo is a prized gamefish renowned for its incredible speed and aggressive strikes. This sleek, torpedo-shaped fish is a member of the mackerel family and is highly sought after by anglers targeting pelagic species. Found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, including the Florida Keys, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and the waters off Hawaii, Wahoo provide an exhilarating challenge due to their blistering runs and acrobatic leaps.
Effective techniques for catching Wahoo include high-speed trolling, live baiting, and jigging. When trolling, use heavy-duty conventional gear with 50-80lb test line and wire leaders to prevent bite-offs. Popular lures include deep-diving plugs, skirted trolling lures, and large spoons. Live baiting with small tuna or mackerel can also be extremely effective, especially when fished near floating debris or weed lines. For jigging, use heavy metal jigs and work them aggressively near underwater structures or drop-offs.
Wahoo fishing tends to be best during the warmer months, typically from spring through fall. In areas like Key West, Florida, and Hatteras, North Carolina, Wahoo often migrate closer to shore during these periods. Look for areas with strong currents, temperature breaks, and abundant baitfish. Early morning and late afternoon can be particularly productive times to target these fish.
New anglers should focus on mastering the art of trolling. Start by working with experienced captains who can teach you the proper techniques and show you the best areas to fish. Pay close attention to lure presentation, trolling speed, and the use of outriggers to spread your lines. Be prepared for a blistering strike and a long, hard fight when you hook into a Wahoo.
