The Illinois River near Peoria offers some fantastic walleye fishing opportunities. The river's structure, including wing dams, riprap, and submerged timber, provides ideal habitat for these prized fish. Spring and fall are peak seasons, coinciding with the walleye's spawning runs and increased feeding activity. Jigging with minnows or plastics around structure is a classic and effective technique. Trolling crankbaits along the river channel can also produce good results. A local tip: Pay attention to water clarity; walleye prefer slightly stained water, so adjust your lure selection accordingly. Also, be mindful of the commercial traffic on the river and stay clear of barges and other large vessels. Starved Rock State Park, a short drive from Peoria, provides excellent access to the Illinois River and is a popular spot for walleye anglers.
