Walleye

If you're looking for walleye in northern Indiana, consider a trip to La Crosse. While not as well-known as some of the larger fisheries in the state, the Kankakee River near La Crosse offers a surprisingly good walleye population. The river's mix of shallow riffles, deeper pools, and submerged structure provides ideal habitat. Spring is prime time, as walleye move upstream to spawn. Focus your efforts around bridge pilings and rocky areas where they congregate. Fall is another excellent period, as the walleye feed heavily to prepare for winter. A lipped crankbait worked along the deeper edges of the river channel or a jig tipped with a minnow can be highly effective. Be mindful of water levels, as the Kankakee can fluctuate rapidly after heavy rains. Public access is available at several points along the river, including the Baum's Bridge access site, offering both bank fishing and a boat ramp.
