If you're looking for walleye in northern Minnesota, Grand Rapids is a fantastic base of operations. The area is riddled with prime walleye lakes like Pokegama, known for its complex structure and stained water, and Big Splithand Lake, offering clearer waters and weed beds. Walleye fishing here really heats up after the spring spawn, with the best action typically from late May through June and again in the fall as water temperatures cool. Focus on points, reefs, and submerged timber, especially during low-light periods. A local tip: many anglers have success trolling crankbaits along the edges of weed lines in Pokegama. Also, be aware that the walleye in these waters tend to be slightly smaller on average compared to some other Minnesota lakes, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers. Several public access points around Pokegama make it easy to get on the water, but be prepared for some boat traffic, especially on weekends.
