If you're looking for walleye in northeastern Montana, Culbertson offers access to some excellent fishing on the Missouri River and Fort Peck Lake (though the lake is a bit of a drive). The Missouri River near Culbertson offers more riverine walleye fishing than the lake, which is characterized by long runs and deep holes. Spring and fall are prime times to target walleye here, as they move into shallower water to spawn or feed before winter. Try trolling crankbaits or jigs tipped with minnows along the river channels. A local tip: be mindful of the strong currents in the Missouri, especially during spring runoff, and always check river conditions before heading out. Fort Peck, while a bit further, is a massive reservoir with a thriving walleye population. The walleye in this area are known for their size, so be prepared for a good fight!
