Walleye

Walleye fishing near West Yellowstone is limited, but not entirely nonexistent. Hebgen Lake, a large reservoir on the Madison River, is your best bet. While not a primary walleye fishery, Hebgen does hold a small population, likely introduced at some point. Targeting them requires a shift in tactics from the typical trout fishing. The best time to target walleye is during the spring and fall months when the water temperatures are cooler. Look for them near the dam, or along submerged points and drop-offs. Trolling crankbaits or jigging with minnows are effective techniques. Access to Hebgen is easy, with multiple boat ramps available. Be mindful of the wind, as it can pick up quickly on the lake. Local tip: Focus your efforts in the early morning or late evening, as walleye tend to be more active in low-light conditions. The walleye population is not large, so catch and release is encouraged to help sustain the fishery.
