Walleye

Walleye fishing near Watertown centers around the eastern basin of Lake Ontario and the lower reaches of the Black River. Lake Ontario offers incredible walleye opportunities, particularly during the spring and fall migrations. The Black River, while smaller, provides a more intimate walleye experience, especially after the spring thaw. Focus on areas with current breaks, submerged structure, and rocky bottoms. Spring (post-spawn) and fall (pre-winter) are the most productive times. Try trolling crankbaits or worm harnesses in Lake Ontario, focusing on depths of 15-30 feet. In the Black River, casting jigs tipped with minnows or plastics near dams and bridge pilings is a proven technique. Be aware that Lake Ontario can be unpredictable, so always check the marine forecast before heading out. The walleye population in this area is robust, with many fish in the 3-6 pound range, and some reaching trophy sizes.
