Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout anglers will find some excellent opportunities near Watertown, primarily in the tributaries of Lake Ontario. The Salmon River, while a bit of a drive, is world-renowned for its fall steelhead (lake-run rainbow trout) run. Closer to Watertown, smaller streams like the Sandy Creek system can offer good fishing for resident rainbows, particularly in the spring and fall. The fall run in the Salmon River is legendary, but be prepared for crowds. Early spring, as the water warms, can be productive in the smaller creeks. Egg patterns, nymphs, and small streamers are effective. Access to the Salmon River is available at numerous public access points; check the DEC website for details. Remember to practice catch and release, especially on wild fish. The rainbows in the Salmon River are known for their size and fighting ability, while the creek fish are typically smaller but scrappy.
