Rainbow Trout

While North Tonawanda isn't renowned for its rainbow trout fishing, there are opportunities to be found, particularly in tributaries of the Niagara River and certain sections of the Erie Canal that are stocked. These fish are typically stocked to provide angling opportunities and don't always reproduce naturally in large numbers. Spring and fall are the most productive times, coinciding with stocking and cooler water temperatures. Look for areas with current breaks, deeper pools, and structure like fallen logs or submerged rocks. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or salmon eggs can be effective. Access to these tributaries can be limited, so research public access points beforehand. Check the NYSDEC stocking reports to find out when and where trout have been released. Rainbows in this area are often relatively small, but they provide a fun angling experience close to the city.
