Rainbow Trout

While Wolcott isn't renowned for Rainbow Trout fishing, some smaller streams and tributaries flowing into Lake Ontario do receive seasonal runs of these fish. These are primarily migratory fish heading upstream to spawn. The best time to target them is during the fall and spring runs. Keep an eye on water levels; rainfall can significantly impact fishing conditions. Small spoons and spinners, as well as egg imitations, are effective baits. Access to these streams can be limited, so be sure to respect private property and obtain any necessary permits. The rainbows here can be surprisingly large, often exceeding 5 pounds, as they've spent time growing in Lake Ontario. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the population.
