Rainbow Trout

While Lansing isn't necessarily a rainbow trout mecca, there are still some viable options for anglers looking to target these fish. Tributaries to Cayuga Lake, such as Salmon Creek, receive runs of rainbow trout, particularly during the spring and fall spawning seasons. These fish are often steelhead that have migrated from the lake. Focus your efforts on these creeks from late March through May and again from September through November. Egg patterns, nymphs, and small streamers are effective fly patterns. Spin anglers can try small spinners or spoons. Access to these streams can be limited, so be sure to research public access points and respect private property. The rainbows in these streams can be wary, so use stealth and light tackle. Remember to check the DEC regulations for specific stream closures and size/creel limits.
