Walleye

Walleye fishing around Irrigon centers on the mighty Columbia River. This section of the Columbia, influenced by the John Day Dam, offers excellent Walleye habitat. The best time to target Walleye here is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. During the spring spawn, they can be found in shallower areas near spawning grounds. In the fall, they fatten up before winter. Trolling crankbaits or jigs along the bottom is a proven technique. Focus on areas with current breaks, submerged structure, and drop-offs. The Port of Umatilla offers a convenient boat launch. Be mindful of the strong currents and changing water levels on the Columbia. Walleye in this area are known to reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a good fight. Always consult the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations for size and bag limits, as they can vary depending on the section of the river.
