If you're looking to hook into some Walleye in Oregon, the Columbia River near Rainier offers some excellent opportunities. This section of the river is known for its deep channels, backwater sloughs, and rocky structure, all prime Walleye habitat. Spring and early summer are generally considered the best times to target these fish, as they move into shallower waters to spawn. Trolling crankbaits along the shipping channel edges or jigging near submerged structure can be highly effective. A key to success here is understanding the tidal influence, as the river is tidally affected this far upstream. Walleye activity often increases during periods of slower current. Be aware of the commercial traffic on the Columbia and plan your fishing accordingly. The Rainier City Docks provide good access, but be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends. Walleye in this area tend to run in the 2-5 pound range, but larger specimens are certainly possible.
