If you're chasing walleye in western Wyoming, Opal offers a decent shot, primarily at Fontenelle Reservoir. This large reservoir on the Green River is your best bet in this area. While it's not a trophy walleye destination, you'll find a solid population of eater-sized fish, especially in the 14-18 inch range. Spring and fall are prime times, as walleye move shallower to spawn or feed aggressively before winter. Focus on areas near the dam, submerged creek channels, and rocky points. Trolling crankbaits or jigging with nightcrawlers and plastics are effective. Be aware that Fontenelle can experience significant water level fluctuations, so check conditions before you go. A boat is highly recommended for accessing the best fishing spots. Remember Wyoming requires anglers 14 years and older to possess a valid fishing license.
