Weakfish

Weakfish, while not a primary target in the immediate Alexandria Bay area, can occasionally be found in the brackish waters of the St. Lawrence River as it flows towards the Great Lakes. These fish are more common in saltwater environments, but they sometimes venture into areas with a mix of fresh and saltwater, especially during their spawning runs. The best time to target Weakfish here is during the late spring and early summer when they follow schools of baitfish. Look for them near grassy flats, channel edges, and areas with submerged structure. A helpful local tip is to use light tackle and small jigs or soft plastics, as Weakfish have delicate mouths. Pay attention to the tide, as Weakfish often feed more actively during periods of moving water. While the Weakfish population in this region is not as abundant as in coastal areas, the thrill of catching one in this unique environment makes it worthwhile.
