While perhaps not the first species that comes to mind when you think of fishing near Picayune, Mississippi, White Bass can offer some exciting seasonal action. The key is to target them during their spring spawning runs as they move upstream in rivers and creeks connected to larger bodies of water. The Pearl River and its tributaries offer the best opportunities. Look for areas with current, such as below dams or near bridge pilings. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Focus your efforts during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate rapidly in the Pearl River system, so always check conditions before heading out. A local tip: White Bass tend to school tightly, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby. While not always large, White Bass are aggressive and provide a fun fight on light tackle.
