White Bass

For some fast-paced white bass action, Crete, Nebraska, offers several options. The Blue River is a consistent producer, especially during the spring spawning run when the white bass congregate below dams and riffles. Look for areas where the current is broken by rocks or other obstructions. Late spring and early summer are usually the best times. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are all effective lures. A local trick is to use a tandem rig with two small jigs; this increases your chances of hooking multiple fish at once. Public access to the Blue River is available at several points, but be aware of changing water levels, especially after heavy rains. The white bass in this area aren't generally huge, but they're aggressive fighters and can provide a lot of fun on light tackle. Keep an eye out for bird activity, as flocks of birds often indicate schools of feeding white bass.
