Largemouth Bass

Crete, Nebraska, offers some decent largemouth bass fishing, particularly in the smaller lakes and farm ponds scattered around the area. While not a trophy bass destination, it's a great place to get your bass fix. Spring and fall are the peak seasons. During the spring spawn, focus on shallow bays and coves with submerged vegetation. In the fall, as the water cools, bass tend to move towards deeper structure. A local tip is to try fishing the Blue River; although it's more known for catfish, it holds some surprisingly good bass, especially around submerged logs and rock piles. Public access can be limited, so research ahead of time to find boat ramps or walk-in access points. Largemouth in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures will work. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and plastic worms are all good choices. Don't be afraid to experiment with different colors and retrieves to see what the bass are biting on that day.
