Largemouth Bass

Looking for largemouth bass in the Valparaiso, Nebraska area? While not a bass fishing mecca, the smaller lakes and ponds scattered throughout Saunders County offer some surprisingly good opportunities. Many of these are private, so always get permission first. However, public access is available at Olive Creek State Recreation Area, just a short drive away. Spring (late April-May) and fall (September-October) are your best bets, as the bass are most active during these periods with moderate water temperatures. Focus on structure – submerged timber, weed lines, and drop-offs are all good places to start. In the summer, bass will seek deeper, cooler water during the day. Local tip: Olive Creek can get weedy in the summer, so weedless lures are a must. Also, pay attention to water clarity; if it's muddy after a rain, try brighter colored lures. The bass here aren't pressured as heavily as in larger reservoirs, so don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques. Expect to find bass in the 1-3 pound range, with the occasional larger fish.
