Chasing White Bass near Austin? You're in for a treat, especially during the spring spawning run. These fish congregate in the shallows of Lake Travis, Lake Buchanan, and the Colorado River above the lakes. Focus on areas with moving water – the mouths of creeks and the tailraces below dams are prime spots. Early spring (late February through April) is the peak, but you can find them schooling throughout the year. Look for surface activity – birds diving are a dead giveaway. Local tip: The sandy beaches and rocky points on Lake Travis are easily accessible from shore. When the water is clear, try using small, flashy crankbaits or spinners. If the water is stained, switch to something with more vibration, like a lipless crankbait or a jig. Remember, these fish are often chasing shad, so match your lure size and color accordingly. Check water release schedules from the dams, as increased flow can concentrate the fish.
