Atlantic Sturgeon
Jacksonville, Florida, provides access to the lower St. Johns River, a known habitat for Atlantic Sturgeon. While not a primary target for most anglers, sturgeon are occasionally caught, particularly during their spawning runs. These runs typically occur during the cooler months, from late fall to early spring. The deep channels of the St. Johns, especially around bends and near the mouth of the river, can hold sturgeon. Anglers fishing for catfish or striped bass often encounter them. If you happen to hook a sturgeon, remember that they are a protected species. Handle the fish with utmost care while it remains in the water, and release it immediately. Be sure to use heavy tackle capable of landing these large fish should you hook one. Public boat ramps abound along the St. Johns in Jacksonville, providing easy access. Pay attention to tidal currents, which can be significant, and adjust your fishing strategy accordingly.
