Barracuda

San Diego's waters are home to some feisty Barracuda, particularly during the warmer months. These toothy predators are ambush hunters, often found patrolling kelp forests and rocky reefs. Spring through fall offers the best action. Look for them around La Jolla Cove, Point Loma, or near the kelp beds off Coronado. High-speed trolling with flashy lures or casting surface iron near structure are both effective techniques. Barracuda are visual hunters, so bright colors and erratic retrieves often trigger strikes. When targeting barracuda, it's crucial to use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs. Pay attention to the tidal flow, as barracuda often position themselves to intercept bait being swept along by the current. Also, respect the local regulations regarding size and bag limits, as these can vary.
