San Diego is a yellowtail hotspot, and for good reason. The waters off Point Loma and La Jolla are particularly productive, offering a mix of kelp forests, rocky reefs, and open ocean where these powerful fish thrive. Peak season typically runs from late summer through fall, when warmer water pushes north. Live bait, especially sardines and mackerel, is the most effective way to target yellowtail. Trolling feathers or jigs can also produce results. A key tip is to monitor water temperature breaks and areas of upwelling, as these often concentrate baitfish and attract yellowtail.
