Blue Catfish

Odum, Georgia, offers some surprisingly good blue catfish action in its local rivers and creeks. The Altamaha River, in particular, is a prime spot, known for holding some hefty blues. While the Altamaha is the main draw, don't overlook the smaller tributaries like the Ohoopee River and Canoochee River; they can be easier to navigate and still hold good numbers of fish, especially after a good rain. Spring and early summer are prime times, when the catfish are actively feeding and spawning. Another great time is fall as they fatten up for the winter. For bank access, look for bridge crossings and public land along the rivers – be mindful of private property. A local tip: try fishing with cut shad or bream for bait; the blues in this area seem to have a real preference for it. Be prepared for some current, especially in the Altamaha, so heavier weights are a must. Blues in the Altamaha can range from a few pounds to well over 50, so make sure you have the right gear!
