Spotted Bass

While largemouth bass are the main draw around Odum, Georgia, don't overlook the possibility of encountering spotted bass, especially in the Altamaha River watershed. These feisty fish can be found in the river's tributaries and connected creeks. They prefer slightly cooler, clearer water than largemouth, so look for them in areas with rocky bottoms and faster currents. Spring and fall are also good times to target spotted bass, and they readily take a variety of lures, including small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. Try fishing near bridges and other structures that create current breaks. Accessing these areas often requires a kayak or small boat, as bank fishing can be limited. Keep in mind that spotted bass are typically smaller than largemouth, but they are known for their aggressive strikes and spirited fights. Be sure to check local regulations regarding size and creel limits.
