Spotted Bass

While largemouth get most of the attention in Pembroke, don't overlook the spotted bass. You'll find them primarily in the Ogeechee River, but also in some of the creeks that feed into it. Unlike largemouth that prefer stiller waters, spotted bass tend to favor areas with current and rocky bottoms. Look for them near shoals, bridge pilings, and creek mouths. Spring and fall are excellent times to target them, as they become more active with cooler water temperatures. Smaller crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are effective lures. A key tip: focus on areas with current breaks, as spotted bass will often ambush prey from these spots. The spotted bass in the Ogeechee tend to be smaller than largemouth, but they are aggressive fighters and can provide a lot of fun on light tackle. Check water levels before heading out, as the river can become difficult to navigate after heavy rain.
