White Bass

If you're looking for some fast-paced action in southeast Georgia, consider a trip to Pembroke for white bass. These fish make their spawning runs up the Ogeechee River and its tributaries in the early spring, typically February through April. This is when you'll find them in the highest concentrations. The Ogeechee is a blackwater river system, so visibility can be limited; brighter lures like chartreuse or white tend to work best. Focus your efforts around shoals, rocky areas, and creek mouths where the white bass congregate to spawn. A public access point near the Highway 119 bridge provides decent bank fishing opportunities, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to explore more of the river. Be mindful of water levels, as the Ogeechee can fluctuate rapidly after rainfall. The white bass here aren't giants, averaging around a pound, but their aggressive strikes and willingness to chase lures make for an exciting day on the water.
