Spotted Bass

While largemouth get most of the attention, Lyons, Georgia, also holds populations of spotted bass, offering a fun alternative for anglers. These feisty fish often inhabit the same waters as largemouth, but tend to prefer slightly deeper, clearer areas with more current. Look for them in the Ohoopee River and its tributaries. Spotted bass are particularly active during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring. They readily strike small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs fished along rocky banks and submerged structure. Downsizing your presentation can be key to enticing a strike. A local trick is to use lighter line and finesse techniques, especially when the water is clear. Access to the Ohoopee River is available at several public boat ramps and access points, but be mindful of shallow areas and submerged obstacles. The spotted bass in the area are generally smaller than largemouth, but their aggressive nature and willingness to bite make them a rewarding target.
