Spotted Bass

Smyrna, Georgia, offers anglers the chance to tangle with spotted bass in the Chattahoochee River and its impoundments. While largemouth get most of the attention, the spotted bass population is healthy and provides a fun alternative. Nickajack Lake, in particular, holds a good number of spots that thrive in the rocky structure and current. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, as they become more active and move into shallower water. Look for them around rocky points, submerged timber, and bridge pilings. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are all effective lures. A key to success is to fish areas with current, as spotted bass prefer moving water. Public access is available at several boat ramps around Nickajack Lake, but be prepared for some boat traffic, especially on weekends. The spotted bass in this area tend to be scrappy fighters, making them a fun target for anglers of all skill levels. Don't overlook the smaller creeks and streams that feed into the Chattahoochee either; they can hold some surprising catches.
