The Catawba River system, particularly Lake Norman (a bit further east), is known for its population of blue cats. These fish can reach impressive sizes, and targeting them is a popular pastime for many anglers in the region. The best time to fish for blue catfish is typically during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. Use cut bait, live bait, or prepared stink baits on heavy tackle. Focus on fishing deep channels, humps, and flats near the old river channel. A practical tip: many anglers find success drifting with the current, dragging their baits along the bottom. Lake Norman has numerous public boat ramps and fishing piers, making it accessible to anglers of all types. The blue catfish population is robust, and while catching a true monster requires patience and persistence, there are plenty of smaller fish to keep things interesting.
