Largemouth Bass

While Spruce Pine, North Carolina, might be better known for its mountain scenery, it also provides access to some decent largemouth bass fishing. The nearby lakes and reservoirs, like Lake James (a bit of a drive), offer a mix of shallow, weedy areas and deeper, clear water that largemouth love. Spring and fall are traditionally the best times to target them, as they're more active and feeding aggressively. During the warmer months, focus on fishing early and late in the day around submerged structure. A good local tip: Many of the smaller lakes in the area have limited access, so research beforehand. Largemouth in these mountain lakes tend to be opportunistic feeders, so spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and plastic worms are all effective. Don't overlook the shoreline cover – bass often hold tight to fallen trees and docks. The largemouth population is healthy, and while trophy-sized fish aren't common, there are plenty of fish in the 2-4 pound range to keep you entertained.
