Blue Catfish

Shawnee, Oklahoma, might not be the first place that comes to mind for Blue Catfish, but the North Canadian River and nearby smaller lakes hold some surprisingly good specimens. The key to success here is understanding the catfish's habits in these smaller waterways. Look for deep holes, especially those with submerged timber or rock structure. Cut bait, stink bait, and live sunfish are all effective, depending on the time of year. Spring and early summer, as the water warms, can be excellent for targeting spawning catfish. A practical tip: Focus your efforts after heavy rains, as the increased flow can stir up food and attract catfish. Be aware of river conditions, as the North Canadian can rise quickly. Access points are available, but some require a bit of walking. Targeting areas further from easily accessible locations can increase your chances of finding larger, less pressured fish.
