Spotted Bass

Spotted Bass, often called 'Spots', offer a fun alternative to Largemouth around Shawnee, Oklahoma. While not as abundant as Largemouth in some areas, they're present in the North Canadian River and some of the smaller surrounding lakes. Spots tend to prefer moving water and rocky structure, so targeting areas with current and gravel bottoms is a good strategy. They're also more tolerant of clearer water than Largemouth. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target them, as they become more active during these periods. A finesse approach with smaller lures and lighter line is often effective. Try using crankbaits or jigs around rocky points and submerged timber. A local tip: When the water is clear, downsizing your line and using fluorocarbon leaders can make a big difference. Public access points are available along the river, but be prepared to wade or fish from the bank in many areas.
