Bluefish

Groton, Connecticut, boasts some excellent bluefish action throughout its coastal waters. From the Mystic River to the Thames and Long Island Sound, these aggressive predators are a common sight. The bluefish bite really turns on in the late summer and fall as they fatten up before their migration. Look for them blitzing on schools of bunker or silversides. Topwater lures are incredibly effective and exciting when the blues are feeding aggressively. Diamond jigs and metal spoons are also staples in any local bluefish angler's tackle box. Remember, blues have sharp teeth, so use wire leaders. A great access point is the Groton Town Boat Launch, providing easy access to the Sound. Pay attention to the weather; bluefish tend to be more active on overcast days with a bit of chop on the water. The bluefish population here is known for its aggressive feeding habits, making for some memorable battles.
