Bluefish

New London provides excellent access to the Long Island Sound, making it a prime location for targeting bluefish. These aggressive predators are abundant from late spring through fall, offering exciting action for anglers of all skill levels. Bluefish are voracious feeders, known for their 'blitzes' where they attack schools of baitfish on the surface. Look for birds diving and splashing water to locate these feeding frenzies. Popular spots include the Race, Plum Gut, and the Thames River. Trolling, casting with lures, and bait fishing with bunker or mackerel are all effective methods. Be sure to use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs from their sharp teeth. A practical tip is to fish around slack tide, as the strong currents in this area can make it difficult to present your bait effectively. The Fort Trumbull State Park boat launch provides good access to the Thames River and Long Island Sound. Be prepared for some truly epic battles when you hook into a large bluefish in these waters!
