Bluegill

If you're looking for some relaxed bluegill action, Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, offers several options, primarily within the numerous small ponds and slow-moving stretches of the Platte River floodplain. Spring, especially around spawning time in May and June, is prime. Look for shallow, weedy areas where the bluegill congregate to build nests. A simple bobber and worm setup works wonders, but small jigs or insect imitations can also be very effective. Many of the smaller ponds are on private land, so be sure to get permission before fishing. The public access points along the Platte River, however, offer bank fishing opportunities. Be aware that water levels on the Platte can fluctuate dramatically, so check conditions before you go. The bluegill in this area aren't huge, but they're plentiful and eager to bite, making it a great spot for a family outing or a quick fishing trip.
