Brook Trout

If you're chasing brook trout in the Buffalo, NY region, you're in for a treat! The surrounding area boasts a network of smaller streams and tributaries that hold surprisingly healthy populations of these beautiful fish. While Lake Erie itself isn't brook trout habitat, the creeks and streams flowing into it, especially those in the Zoar Valley area, offer excellent opportunities. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the fish are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. Be prepared for tight casting situations in these often heavily wooded areas. A shorter rod, around 6-7 feet, will be your best friend. Access to many of these streams involves some hiking, so wear appropriate footwear. Check the DEC's Public Fishing Rights maps before you go to ensure you're fishing legally. The brook trout here aren't huge—think 6-10 inches on average—but their vibrant colors and wild nature make them a truly rewarding catch.
