Targeting Brown Trout in South Lake Tahoe can be a rewarding challenge. While not as numerous as rainbows, the browns here can grow to impressive sizes. Focus your efforts in the deeper sections of the lake, particularly near rocky points and drop-offs. Trolling with large crankbaits or swimbaits that imitate smaller fish is a productive method. Another effective tactic is to fish the shoreline at night with large streamers. Browns are most active during the cooler months, so spring and fall are prime times. A local tip: the area around Emerald Bay is known to hold some trophy-sized browns, but be aware of the boating restrictions in that area. Also, be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially in the fall. The browns in South Lake Tahoe are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs, so be sure to use appropriate tackle.
