Targeting Brown Trout in Shaver Lake requires a bit more strategy than rainbows, but the reward of landing one of these beautiful fish is well worth the effort. Brown trout are more predatory and prefer to ambush their prey. Focus your efforts around rocky points, submerged timber, and areas with drop-offs. Early morning and late evening are prime times, as brown trout tend to be more active in low-light conditions. Trolling with larger minnow-imitating lures or casting crankbaits can be effective. A local tip is to fish deeper during the day and shallower as the sun sets. The Browns will often move into shallower water to feed under the cover of darkness. Be prepared to cover a lot of water, as brown trout can be scattered. Shaver Lake Browns aren't as abundant as rainbows, but the lake has produced some impressive specimens, making it a worthwhile destination for dedicated brown trout anglers.
