Brown Trout

While Aurora isn't exactly known for its trout streams, there are still opportunities to target brown trout within a reasonable drive. The South Platte River, particularly the stretch below Cheesman Reservoir, is a popular destination. It's about an hour and a half drive, but well worth it if you're looking for quality brown trout. This is a tailwater fishery, so water levels can fluctuate depending on releases from the dam. Always check the flows before you go. For a closer option, consider some of the smaller creeks and streams in the foothills west of Aurora. These hold smaller, wild brown trout, and offer a more secluded fishing experience. Summer is a great time to fish these creeks, as the water is cooler and the fish are more active. Small dries and nymphs are the ticket here. Access can be tricky, as many of these areas are on private land, so be sure to respect property boundaries and obtain permission where necessary. Don't expect trophy fish, but the scenery and solitude can be fantastic. Note: A valid Colorado fishing license is required.
