Brown Trout

While Fort Morgan might not be the first place that springs to mind for trout fishing in Colorado, the South Platte River offers some surprisingly good opportunities for brown trout. The river here is characterized by slower currents and warmer temperatures than you might find in the mountains, so adjust your tactics accordingly. Look for trout holding in deeper pools and near submerged structure like downed trees. Spring and fall are the prime times, as the water cools down and the fish become more active before and after the summer heat. A good access point is the Jackson Lake State Park area, although be aware that river flows can fluctuate significantly due to irrigation demands. Try using streamers or nymphs that imitate the local forage, and don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations. The browns here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a well-placed fly can often entice a strike.
